Organized Crime Organized crime has been around for many years. Since the first definition was written organized crime has grown into multiple different meanings. According to the text, Introduction to Criminology, organized crime refers to â€Å"organizations that use violence, provide illegal services, and have immunity of operation.† (Hagan) Organized crime is also used throughout the world within gangs and secret organizations. There are multiple types and definitions of organized crime. The basic four types are; Political-Social, Mercenary (Predatory), In-Group-Oriented, and Syndicate Organized Crime. The term Yakuza, is a common term for the Japanese. Yakuza is the term for â€Å"gangsters (literally, â€Å"good-for-nothings†) are organiz ed crime syndicates of roughly 90,000 members.† (Hagan) The membership in Yakuza groups has been known to be 20 times larger when comparing to the American Mafia. Also, Yakuza are known to be widely involved in sexual slavery. According to the text, â€Å"Thousands of women and children, mainly from developing countries, are forced to work as prostitutes near military bases, to participate in the production of pornography, and to enter into mail-order marriages.† (Hagan) Usually the members of Yakuza are of different races. Some of are from Korea and usually from lower-class backgrounds. The Japanese are not the only ones involved. There are also secret Chinese organizations known as triads.
